What BUILD has achieved

BUILD Advocates through:

An all-party parliamentary group which was launched in 2003. This was originally chaired by Kevin Barron MP, Rother Valley and is now Chaired by Lord Goodlad. Twenty-six MPs and Peers belong to this APPG and it provides BUILD with opportunities to meet with and discuss linking communities with senior Minister from different Government Departments.

The Commonwealth in 2009 BUILD gained accreditation as a Commonwealth Organisation. This has provided us with opportunities to advocate on behalf of community-based partnerships at Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings through the Commonwealth People's Forums and at Commonwealth Education and Health Ministers Meetings.

Other international work we have given presentations at two conferences of municipalities from the Baltic States in Norway. We gave presentations at five conferences in Japan to encourage the development of partnership links between Japan and the Developing South through the Japan Council for International Exchange.

BUILD Promotes Good Practice through:

Its publication "Toolkit for Linking - Opportunities and Challenges" launched by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 2007.

Working with the Welsh Assembly Government, Welsh Council for Voluntary Action and the Wales for Africa Task Force, which are piloting a UN support Gold Star Communities (opens external link) programme encouraging work between community partnerships in particular fields which ultimately will be rolled out across the world.

Build encourages the development of more partnerships through:

Working with the Churches (Anglican, Methodist, and Catholic) to join their international work with the schools for which they are responsible to develop school partnerships.

Working with diaspora organisations to encourage them to use the natural links they have to their countries of heritage to widen those links into their communities in the UK.

Developing a global programme in collaboration with the Commonwealth Foundation of Regional Organisations committed to the development of partnerships in those regions eg East, West and Southern Africa, Caribbean and Asia.
